Sausage Roll/ Easy Sausage Dinner Rolls

Sausage Rolls are a perfect snack/ bread roll for the family and once you start making this at home, it is going to be a regular! Everyone loves Sausage rolls and it is really simple to make and great for parties or picnic. It is a very gratifying snack for kids and tastes delicious hot or cold. Earlier we used to make Sausage rolls by wrapping sausages in Puff Pastries and baking them to a crisp golden brown. The freshly baked crisp puff sausage rolls were just heavenly and many times we have had burnt tongues and fingers. 🙂 You can serve it for a light dinner alongwith some Vegetable Au Gratin,  Chicken and broccoli soup or Vegetable soup.

Recently, when Beenchi (my multi-talented sis) came for a short visit, I was planning to do some puff sausage rolls for the kids (my kids, nephews and nieces) and she asked me to try out sausage bread rolls instead.  Well, I trust her completely and have always revered her baking skills; she has always been the expert baker at home and all her baked delights disappear in no time! So, with her in the lead, we made these sausage rolls. And, although the rolls were not the perfect soft ones as per Ms. Perfect Baker’s standard, every single bit disappeared within no time! Kids were raving about it so much that we made it again the next day with some adjustments. This time the Sausage Rolls came out perfect and although we had taken more measure, the soft and fluffy rolls vanished magically. Lesson learnt: there is no such thing as too many Sausage Dinner rolls; it is never going to be enough!!

The bread came out soft and sweet, and the sight of kids relishing every single bite made my day!  :). I used my Puff pastry to make Egg Puffs the next day but the little one wanted the sausage rolls. Well, can’t blame them; it is absolutely yummy. It has simple ingredients and is quite easy to make. Ingredients:

Maida: 3 cups
Chicken Sausages (2” long): 32 pieces
Yeast: 2 tsp
Warm Milk: 1 cup
Sugar: 60 gms ( 1/3 cup)
Butter: 50 gms  (1/4 cup)
salt: 1 tsp
Egg: 1 no. + 1 for egg wash

Method:

Mix the yeast and 1 tbsp sugar in ÂĽ cup of warm milk and keep covered for 10 minutes. In a wide bowl, mix Maida, salt and rest of the sugar. Keep aside 1 tbsp butter and add the rest of the butter (kept in room temperature) and an egg to Maida. Mix well. Make a well and add the yeast mix, rest of the warm milk and knead for around 10 minutes to get a sticky soft dough. Wash your hands and rub half tbsp butter in your palm and knead again for 5 minutes. If you are using a kneading machine, total 10 minutes kneading is enough. Once you get soft and smooth dough, rub the remaining butter on the dough and cover well and keep aside for rising for about one and half hours.

Meanwhile, cook the sausages in a steamer for 10 – 12 minutes. Punch down the raised dough and divide into 4 equal portions. Take one portion, make a small ball and flatten into a big round (10” to 12 “diameter) with a rolling pin. Cut the circle into 8 parts (with the help of a ruler). Take one triangle and wrap the sausages, starting from the wider part and place in a greased tray with the pointed side down. Repeat the process. Keep it well covered for rising for another 15 mts. Preheat the oven to 200o c. For egg wash, beat one egg with 1 tbsp milk and brush on top of the rolls to coat evenly.

Bake for 15 – 20 minutes till they are fluffed up and turn a perfect golden brown. Repeat the process with the rest of the rolls. Take out and let it cool for 10 minutes. Enjoy the ravishingly soft and fluffy sausage Dinner Rolls!!

Tips:

  • Yeast should be mixed in lukewarm milk. Keep it covered till it rises well.
  • Care should be taken while adding milk. Add little by little till you get a soft and sticky dough. I have used exactly 1 cup of milk altogether.
  • To make it soft and fluffy, you need to knead nicely. If you are using a kneading machine, 10 minutes kneading is enough. With hands, knead for another 5 to 10 minutes to get a smooth dough.
  • Always get a good brand of tasty sausages. If you buy long ones, cut into half and use.
  • Don’t overcrowd the tray. The rolls should be placed with ample space between them to avoid sticking together after rising.

  • You can try filling it with any filling of your choice and seal the edges to make stuffed dinner rolls. Or make stuffed buns.
