Parippu Curry/ Kerala Sadya Parippu Curry

Parippu Curry / Dal curry is a typical and significant dish for Onam or any Kerala Sadya. Sadhya is a grand vegetarian spread on Banana leaf served and enjoyed during festive Occasions in Kerala. Parippu Curry, Avial, Sambar, Kalan, Olan, Pulissery, Vellarikka Pachadi, Pineapple Kichadi, Erissery, Inji Curry, Kumbalanga Moru Curry, Thoran, Koottu curry, Papad, Instant Mango Pickles, Crisps, Palada Payasam, Parippu Pradhaman, Mathanga Payasam, Pazham Pradhaman, Madhurakizhangu payasam etc. are the main dishes during Onam Sadhya. But, unlike the usual Dal curry that we have with Rotis, this Parippu Curry is prepared in typical Kerala style, with mildly spiced ground coconut gravy. It goes well with Rice and Papad. For Kerala Sadya, Parippu curry is served with Ghee and Papad to enhance all the flavors and taste. Sadya style Parippu curry is really simple to prepare and very tasty and healthy food for kids as well. Dal is rich in proteins and provides enough energy for the kids. Moong Dal is used for this Sadya style Parippu curry, which is rich in antioxidants and helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Ingredients :

Mung Beans Lentils: ¾ cup
Green chili: 2 nos.
Small Onion/ Shallots: 3 -4 nos.
Coconut scraped: ½ cup
Turmeric Powder: ½ tsp + more
Cumin/ Jeerah Whole or powder: ½ tsp
Coconut oil: as required
Mustard: ½ tsp
Red dry Chili: few
Curry leaves: few

Method:

Wash and clean the lentils and cook in a pressure cooker adding enough water. Once the Dal is cooked well, grind the coconut with green chili, shallots, turmeric powder and cumin with little water. Add this coconut mix to the dal and cook for few minutes on low flame. Combine well and add salt to taste. It should be thick, but pouring consistency.

Parippu Curry Parippu Curry

Heat coconut oil in a kadai, pop mustards, add curry leaves and red chili. Garnish the Parippu curry with this. Serve hot with ghee and Papad. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • Parippu curry should be thick and of pouring consistency.
  • Add only little water to grind the coconut.
  • Use coconut oil for seasoning to ensure authentic taste.
  • Serve with Ghee and Papad for added flavors and taste.
