Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran / Cherupayar Kaya thoran
Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran is another healthy combination thoran, that is highly nutritious with vitamins, minerals, fibers and proteins. Green Banana and Mung Dal thoran/ Cherupayar Vazhakka thoran is a great side dish with rice. My mom, (as I have mentioned before, she is an expert in combining vegetables to make thoran) is here with me and I am heartily enjoying all her variety thoran dishes. Now a days, it is bustling time in my kitchen and all love, joy and laughter is swarming my home since her arrival. There is nothing like Mother’s love and I am celebrating these precious moments.
These past two weeks, I was busy relishing all my mom’s delicacies and had no time to post new recipes. When she suggested to make Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran, I thought I’d share the recipe with you all. Mung Dal/ Lentils/ Cherupayar is super nutritious to include in your diet because, it contains healthy nutrients, folate, essential minerals and vitamins. Rich in fiber, it aids in digestion and lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) levels, apart from its anti-oxidant properties. Vazhakka/ Green Banana/ Kaya is rich in Pottassium, vitamins and dietary fibers which are great for diabetic patients. The combination of these two super foods makes this Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran more beneficial. This is a simple yet tasty dish with few ingredients. Ingredients for Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran:
Vazhakka/ Kaya/ Raw Banana
: 2 nos
Cherupayar/ Mung Dal
: ½ cup – ¾ cup (cooked)
Small Onion/ shallots
: 4 nos.
: 2 nos.
: 2 cloves
: ½ cup
: ½ tsp
: 3 sprigs.
: ½ tsp
: 2 nos.
Soak the Cherupayar for 5 hours or more. Cook in the pressure cooker with enough water till soft, add salt to taste and keep aside. Peel the Banana skin and cut into small squares and cook immediately with enough water and salt.
Grind the coconut, onions, garlic, green chilies and turmeric powder coarsely. Once the Banana is cooked, add the cooked Cherupayar, followed by coarsely ground Coconut mix. Cover and cook for few minutes together. Combine well, adjust the salt and keep aside.
In a small pan, heat coconut oil and crackle mustards. Add curry leaves and dry red chilies. Garnish Vazhakka Cherupayar thoran with this. Serve warm with rice. Enjoy!
- Soak CheruPayar for 5 hours or more before cooking.
- Coconut should be coarsely ground. You can add curry leaves also while grinding coconut.
- After cutting Banana keep it soaked in water to avoid darkening of skin.
- Cook Banana in just enough water (enough to cover), till soft.
- Green, unripe Banana should be used for preparing this.
- Garlic aids in digestion and makes the thoran tastier.
