Meen Mutta Thoran (Scrambled Fish Roe)
Meen Mutta Thoran or Scrambled Fish Roe is a delicious side dish with rice. Fish Roe is a great source of Vitamin D and ample source of Omega – 3, which makes it extra special! Most of you might have had this Meen mutta thoran sometime; It is a tasty and delightful simple dish.
After Lent season, kids were demanding their favorite non-veg dishes, and this Seer fish egg caught my eye while in the shop. It is in great demand and rarely available, so I considered myself lucky. Wanted to make this Meen mutta thoran/ Fish Mutta thoran, which I learned from mummy (my mil) and so started straight away. The egg was good and big; and got quite lot of egg mass to satisfy the entire family.
Fish roe or Meen Mutta is low in carbs but rich in protein and healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids. It boosts your immunity. I have used Big Onions in this recipe, you can add little shallots/ small onions to enhance the taste. Also, you can try adding little chili powder for a different color and appeal. So, next time you see those eggs, remember to try out this yummy Meen Mutta thoran.

Time : 20 mts
|Seer Fish Egg||: 120- 150 gms|
|Onion||: 1 big|
|Scraped Coconut||: ½ cup|
|Green chilli||: 5-6 nos|
|Turmeric Pdr||: ½ tsp|
|Ginger||: 1” piece|
|Curry leaves||: few|
|Oil (coconut oil)||: 1- 2 tbsp|
Clean the eggs nicely and make a slight cut on one end to take out the egg mass from the thin skin. Take a spoon and scoop it out in a bowl. Chop the onion, ginger and curry leaves finely. Cut the green chilies round. Add the scraped coconut, salt, turmeric powder and combine everything.
Heat coconut oil in a pan, and add the egg mix. Stir well and cover and cook for two minutes, stir well and again cover and cook for another two minutes. Stir again till it is dry. Easy right?? The vitamin rich Meen mutta thoran is ready. Enjoy it hot!!
- Seer fish egg/ black pomfret egg; which has good egg mass, is good for this thoran.
- You can add shallots/ small onions to enhance taste.
- You may also add little chili powder and adjust the green chilies.
- You can cook for a little more time till it is slightly brown according to your taste.
- Use coconut oil for better taste.
